1. The brat clause – Neymar Jr (Barcelona)
When Neymar Jr joined Barcelona in 2013, he had a clause inserted in his contract that assured him that a few friends from Brazil would be allowed to come meet him in Catalonia every 2 months. The eye raising bit in this is, Barcelona even agreed to pay for all of Neymar’s friends expenses, and his condition was there should be no restriction imposed on what they can or cannot do.
It’s safe to say that his performance on the field did not give Barcelona any reason to regret agreeing to that clause. That, coupled with the 222m that they just made from his transfer to PSG should hold them in good stead.
2. The party clause – Ronaldinho (Flamengo)
By the looks of it, Brazilian’s love inserting out of the box clauses in their professional football contracts. One thing is for certain, they love to party. So much so that in 2011, when Ronaldinho joined Flamengo, he inserted a party clause in his contract. The clause allowed him to party twice a week whilst being a part of the club.
Not the most normal request for an athlete, but when it’s Ronaldinho involved, what do you do? A return of 15 goals in 33 appearances probably justified it as well.
3. Keep your hands off, PSG clause – Paul Pogba (Juventus)
In one of his earlier contracts at Juventus, Pogba had a release clause of €60m inserted. However, Juventus were so hell bent on making sure PSG did not come and unsettle their payer, they inserted a release clause of €70m specifically for them.
None of this mattered eventually since Pogba was sold to Man United for a fee in the range of €105m.
4. The no biting clause – Luis Suarez (Barcelona)
I don’t think anyone who has followed football over the past 5-6 years will be surprised reading this. Barcelona inserted a no biting clause in Luis Suarez’s contract following his move from Liverpool. This was of course on the back of him biting Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini in the 2014 World Cup, which obliviously wasn’t the first time Suarez was guilty of biting his opponent.
Honestly, the bite almost cancelled his move to Barcelona. They were genuinely concerned about his antics, and Liverpool lost out on some additional money that they could have extracted out of the Spanish club. 3 years later, Barcelona couldn’t be happier that he’s a part of their team, Liverpool would kill for someone of his class to come back to the club. And Suarez has managed to keep his teeth to himself.
5. No fly clause – Dennis Bergkamp (Arsenal)
Dennis Bergkamp was one of the premier league’s first superstars. In an age where all top players wanted to play in either Italy or Spain, Dennis made the move from Inter to Arsenal in 1995, winning a bagful of trophies, and finished 3rd twice in the Fifa World Player of the Year award. However, due to his fear of flying, he had a clause inserted into his contract that exempted him from playing every time the Arsenal team had to board a flight to get to a match venue.
This earned him the nickname – the Non-flying Dutchman.
Which one of these contract clauses do you think is the most bizarre? Let us know!
