Big Weekend: Man United, Man City, Liverpool and More

Alright, the international break is over. We’ve got some mouthwatering games to look forward to as we welcome back the Premier League. We’ve handpicked the stand out fixtures from Gameweek 4. Come this way as we analyse a battle between leaky defences and scintillating attacks, Harry Kane waking up from his August slumber, reigning league champions taking on their predecessor, and a visit to the Potteries for Man United.

Manchester City vs Liverpool (10/09/2017; 5 PM IST/12:30 BST)

Liverpool make the short trip to Manchester to take on City to kick off the weekend. This one promises to be a cracker. Both Liverpool and Man City had leaky defences last season, and from what we’ve seen so far this season, not a lot has changed. Both teams could boast of a good set of attackers last season, and they’ve only got stronger this season. Both managers have added to their attack, without signing a centre back or a centre midfielder, as logic would suggest. However, we aren’t complaining. We can look forward to goals, lots of it. A game this early on in the season between 2 direct rivals often tends to be a cagey, almost chess like affair. This one promises to be a game where both teams would like to invite the other on, and counterattack at great speed. It’s going to be good fun to watch. Coutinho magically recovered from his back injury whilst on international duty, and it’ll be interesting to see if he’s welcomed back into the fold immediately. Gabriel Jesus looks like one of the most promising youngsters in the league, and has the ability and form to wreck havoc on this leaky Liverpool defence. Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino have been in fine form, and with new signing Salah, City’s equally leaky defence is going to find it hard to maintain a clean-sheet. We can see this one being an entertaining, high scoring draw.

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur (10/09/2017; 07:30 PM IST/3 pm BST)

Spurs finally managed to get the signings they so badly needed. They got their replacement for Kyle Walker, they’ve managed to get a striker who can give Harry Kane some competition and more importantly, rest. Eriksen and Dembele have been immense so far this season, and add the youthful exuberance of Dele Alli into the mix, and this Spurs team looks special. They now have some the depth their squad was crying out for. Everton have hired well this summer. Sigurdsson is just the kind of player Everton needed, but he’s not going to be of much use if the manager keeps playing him on the left of a front three with Rooney and Sandro. He has got to be playing in his favoured number 10 role, which would mean dropping Rooney. Or accommodating him somewhere else in the team, like the Man United managers after Ferguson and before Mourinho did. That obviously didn’t end well. Spurs have had a bit of a shaky start to the season, likewise with Everton. They both sit sit on 4 points after 3 games, and will be looking to register their second wins of the season. We’re looking forward to watching Christian Eriksen play for Spurs (we always are), and it’ll be interesting to see how Wayne Rooney copes on the field after his recent drink driving fiasco. Mousa Dembele vs Gylfi Sigurdsson will be a tasty individual battle.

Leicester City vs Chelsea (10/09/2017; 07:30 pm IST, 3 pm BST)

Chelsea play away at Leicester on Saturday, the team they dethroned as champions in May. After a shocking start to the season, they’ve found their form with 2 impressive victories. The worrying stat for Chelsea fans is that the team has not managed a single win away from home in the month of September in their last 4 PL seasons (4 draws, 3 losses). Cesc Fabregas has looked good, and the Spaniard has been involved in 6 goals in 4 appearances against the Foxes, a team he has taken a liking for in his time at the Bridge. Jamie Vardy has scored 10 goals in 16 PL games, since Craig Shakespear took over as manager in Feb, 2017. Also, Leicester have managed to keep only one clean sheet against Chelsea in 11 league matches. We expect Morata and Fabregas to be too much for Leicester to handle. It’ll be interesting to see if Danny Drinkwater makes his debut for Chelsea against his former team. Mahrez tried engineering a move away on the final day of the window, unsuccessfully. That works in Leicester’s favour though. Mahrez is the most gifted player in that team, and one more year from him is a good thing for Leicester. Him, along with Vardy are the one’s the Chelsea defence should be worried about.

Stoke City vs Manchester United (10/09/2017; 10:00 pm  IST; 5:30 pm BST)

We end the Saturday with a seemingly tricky fixture for United, as they take on Stoke City at the Bet365 Stadium. Stoke City are unbeaten against United in their last 4 league games, and Mark Hughes is unbeaten against Jose Mourinho in their last 3 matches. United and Jose will be looking to set that record straight. Romelu Lukaku took his fine league form to the international arena, and bagged a hat-trick for Belgium. He has scored 16 goals, and assisted a further twice in his last 18 league games. Henrik Mkhitaryan has 5 assists so far this season. Only Thierry Henry and Cesc Fabregas have had 6 assists within the first 4 games of the season. The Armenian will be looking to join the tiny, illustrious group. It’ll be interesting to see who plays between Martial and Rashford, since Mourinho doesn’t seem to want to play them both at the same time. So it’s Mata on one side with Martial/Rashford on the other side. New Signing Jesse Rodriguez scored on his Stoke Debut against Arsenal, and he’ll be looking to do more of the same come Saturday. They’ve let Bojan go out on loan to Spanish outfit Deportivo Alaves. They’ll be hoping Xherdan Shaqiri will be able to link up with Jesse, and get some purchase out of this United defence. We expect United to eventually edge this one by a goal or two.
