It was a really busy deadline day. Arsenal tried breaking the bank for Monaco’s Lemar, but it was too late in the window to initiate such a big transfer. Manchester City’s deal for Alexis Sanchez depended on Arsenal getting Lemar, so City will possibly have to wait for a further 12 months before they can finally get their man. Arsenal now have a disgruntled player on their books, one who would rather not be there. He’s going to be more of a negative influence on the team. City wouldn’t be that worried though. They’ve already spent a truckload of money this summer, and will be a dangerous outfit, with or without Sanchez.
Chelsea managed to botch up three more transfers. First, a fee for Ox-Chamberlin was agreed with Arsenal (£35m), but the English midfielder decided to move to Liverpool instead. Conte apparently wanted to use him as a wing back, but the Ox has publicly stated his preference to play in the centre of the park. They then went on to lose Fernando Llorente, a player they have been courted pretty much all summer to Tottenham. They ended the window by agreeing a fee (£35m) with Everton for Ross Barkley, who even went on to agree personal terms with Chelsea. After all of this, Barkley had a change of heart, and decided a move to Chelsea is not what we wants. He decided to go back to Everton. They eventually managed to sign David Zappacosta (£24m) from Torino. Antonio Conte finally got his wing back, definitely not his first choice though. They ended the window with the signing of Danny Drinkwater from Leicester for £35m, who we believe will be a good signing. So a day that started badly for Chelsea, ended pretty decently.
Let’s now move on to the clubs who did manage to find some sort of value in an otherwise bizarre deadline day, that was part of an even crazier transfer window.
Tottenham Hotspur
The Spurs squad was crying out loud for some fresh faces, and they waited awfully long to get their deals over the line. Tottenham signed Spanish striker Fernando Llorente from Swansea City for £15m, and French wing-back Serge Aurier from PSG for £23m. Up until then, they had signed the highly rated Davidson Sanchez from Ajax for £28m, and some kid from Argentina who we don’t have to discuss now. He’s one for the future. They also made some good money on deals for Kyle Walker and Kevin Wimmer with Manchester City and Stoke City, respectively. This coupled with a host of low profile exits, and Tottenham suddenly have a neat net spend of +£3.4m. Trust Daniel Levy to find value in a market this insane.
Liverpool
Liverpool are another team that started the window slowly. They managed to anger Southampton, thanks to their tapping up of Virgil van Dijk. They spent all summer sending admiring glances his way, but to no avail. They weren’t able to get the deal over the line. They signed Mohmad Salah from AS Roma for £34.3m, and the winger has already shown how useful he can be. They managed to hold on to Coutinho for at least another season, and that’s huge. They also beat Chelsea to Alex Oxalade-Chamberlin’s signature, for which they paid a cool £35m. They also managed to get rid of Sakho, who signed for Crystal Palace for a fee in the range of £23m. Sakho is obviously a fine defender, but has had issues with coach Jurgen Klopp for a while now. They had signed young Andrew Robertson from Hull, and Dominic Solanke from Chelsea earlier on in their window. With Sakho being their only high profile exit, Liverpool have a net spend of -£33.8m.
(Liverpool have agreed terms with German side RB Leipzig for the signing of midfielder Naby Keita, who will join them next season)
Swansea City
Wow, what a difference £45m makes. Swansea received the sum when the sold Gylfi Sigurdsson to Everton, and received a further £15m when they agreed to sell Fernando Llorente to Tottenham. They then went on to re-sign former striker Wilfred Bony from Manchester City for £12m. I know what you’re all thinking – yes, he is still alive. They proceeded to then sign former wonder-kid Renato Sanchez on loan from Bayern Munich. A lot of people are seeing this as a fall from grace for young Sanchez, but that isn’t the case. He is very much in Bayern’s plans for the future, as stated by their President the other day. They wanted to send him to a club where he can compete at the highest level, and play week in, week out. Swansea seemed like the best fit. They also signed Tammy Abraham on loan from Chelsea, midfielder Sam Clucas from Hull City for £15m, and Spanaird Roque Mesa from Las Palmas for £11m. They’ll probably take time to settle considering the number of new faces in the squad, but Swansea really needed an influx of new players. They’ve managed to get those players, all at a net spend of, +£35.6m. Solid business, but will it be enough for survival?
