8 Top Players Available in the Transfer Market: Useful Additions to Any Premier League Team for 2017-18

The summer transfer window has already thrown up its usual anarchy of player rumours. It has also been a showcase of surprises, as Chelsea’s bid for Romelu Lukaku was hijacked by Manchester United. The Premier League’s summer transfer market has also seen cash thrown around with reckless abandon.

The season is under a month from kicking off, and teams are nowhere near finishing their transfer market business. There are still a number of players available for transfer, so who is useful to the top clubs of the Premier League?

Riyad Mahrez, Attacking Midfielder – Leicester City: £25.50m

Riyad Mahrez is expected to leave Leicester this summer, but it looks like it could be a year too late for the Algerian international. His form last season has hurt him in the transfer market, and rumours of him signing with Barcelona are a thing of the past. His six-goal tally in 2016-17 was a return to type of previous seasons, and whether or not he can reach the heights he did during Leicester’s title winning term are unknown.

A great passer and dribbler of the ball, Mahrez would fit in well with Arsenal; although Arsene Wenger has his eyes on young players from France. It seems unlikely one of last season’s top six would pay the £25.5 million valuation for Mahrez. Perhaps, Tottenham could be keen as the team haven’t really dipped into the transfer market yet. Meanwhile, Everton are spending freely, and they could look toward the Algerian.

Joe Hart, Goalkeeper – Manchester City: £11.05m

Joe Hart was brave to leave England in the summer of 2016 for Italy. But after a season on the peninsula, things don’t look great for England’s No.1. Hart’s maiden campaign with Torino was not a success. Despite finishing ninth, Hart and his defence gave up the league’s fourth most goals (66) as the goalkeeper looked out of his depth in decision making.

So far, there have been few teams chasing Hart and even Torino has gone in a different direction, signing former Paris Saint-Germain ‘keeper Salvatore Sirigu. Hart has been most notably linked with West Ham, but Newcastle have suddenly joined the race for the goalkeeper Pep Guardiola can’t wait to get rid of. Hart’s biggest weakness is his ability to play the ball out from the back, which is why Guardiola doesn’t want him. Valued at £11.05m, he is a great price for a mid-table side.

Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez, Striker – Bayer Leverkusen: £15.30m

Javier Hernandez is truly one of the most underrated strikers in Europe. The Mexican tallied 11 goals in 26 Bundesliga games last season. Despite his goal scoring capabilities, Bayer Leverkusen are interested in selling due to Hernandez’s contract expiring in the summer 2018. The striker has been linked to a move to Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles FC following his contract’s completion, but Bayer do not want him to leave for free.

West Ham have been most widely linked with Hernandez in recent days, and the Hammers desperately need a high-calibre striker. There is still the chance he could end up in LA for 2018, but the MLS team won’t be coughing up a large transfer fee. Hernandez has always been known for his strong finishing and wherever he ends up, his new team can expect goals.

Andrea Belotti, Striker – Torino: £90m

Chelsea are expected to turn their attention to Italian ace Andrea Belotti now that Romelu Lukaku is a Manchester United player. Belotti is a great alternative, although his price tag is high.

Strong in the air or with the ball at his feet, Belotti was the reason Torino overcame a poor goals conceded record last term to finish ninth. His 26 goals in 35 matches ranked him third in the race for the golden boot, two behind winner Eden Dzeko. Chelsea look like the only team that will sign Belotti unless Roma or another Italian side beat them to it.

Radja Nainggolan, Midfielder – Roma: £34m

Radja Nainggolan is the most complete midfielder in football. Yes, that is right, the most complete midfielder. The Belgian has been the heart and soul of Roma on the pitch since he arrived from Cagliari in January 2014. More important than Francesco Totti and Daniele De Rossi, Nainggolan has proven he is a world-class midfielder over and over again.

He can play box-to-box, as a defensive stopper or as an attacking midfielder behind a lone striker as he is incredibly versatile. He would be perfect for Chelsea, who have been linked to Nainggolan already. He would improve any Premier League side, and Roma have told him he can leave this summer.

Leon Goretzka, Midfielder – Schalke: £20m

Leon Goretzka’s transfer price went up following his performance at the FIFA Confederations Cup for Germany. The tall, graceful midfielder was a key member of the cup winners and put his name down for a spot in next year’s World Cup squad. The 22-year-old’s contract with Schalke expires next summer, so the Germans may cash-in on him now.

Goretzka offers Liverpool a great option this summer as an alternative to the much sought after Naby Keita. RB Leipzig will play in the Champions League; therefore, the team have no reason to sell Keita. The Reds and Arsenal are both possible destinations for the now in-demand Schalke man Goretzka.

Carlos Bacca, Striker – AC Milan: £17m

Not too long ago, Carlos Bacca was one of the most prized strikers in Europe. Yet, for whatever reason, things just didn’t take off for him in Milan. With the red and black’s summer transfer splurge, Bacca is no longer required, and teams are circling to sign the Colombian.

A great finisher who can out muscle defenders, Bacca is rumoured to have a £17m price tag. Arsenal and Everton have been linked, but both now have strikers in place. A possible move to Newcastle, West Ham or Southampton could materialise.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Striker – Unattached: Free

What is not to love about Zlatan Ibrahimovic? Sure, he is coming off an injury and he has a massive contract; but he is a proven winner. The Swede scored 31% of Manchester United’s goals last season, and without him during the first three-quarters of the year, United wouldn’t have made Europe or won the Europa League.

There is no transfer fee to pay for a player that has won trophies everywhere he has been. Manchester United have been rumoured to re-sign the Swede, although moves to Atletico Madrid and Los Angeles Galaxy have also been whispered.
